Jean's Brainstorming

I've been spending a little more time brainstorming on ROAD TRIP today.  I'm getting some amazing ideas, and I think it's going to be, gasp, a romance. I'm going to see if I can complete the book in a timeline of less than a week book time.  Most of my books cover YEARS.  I really want to see how to get to the full story over the course of a couple of days like other people seem to be able to do.

Don't forget to have a sex scene or three. Oh, I know someone who should star in them! (No, not me! Hilda! Hilda! Hilda!)

Sex scene? Blinks. No. None of that. I don't know what that stuff is anymore.

Hilda wants to know if you've been a good boy. I told her you've been being very good lately. She says that's a good thing. She'd hate to have to come over there and discipline you. But, since you've been so good, maybe she will anyway....

Jean! You're naughty! I like that about you!

But let's not shock Wendy and Tam. They're both such innocent sweet lasses. ;)

They haven't met Hilda.

Poor Hilda. Never to see the light of day. I used to have Twilight on my computer until this last disaster, and I lost it then.

I do understand about wanting to have all the action in a few days. But does love build that fast?

When I wrote "Darkness, Oklahoma," the action took place over a week. And the story got away from me. So many things were happening that it was practically impossible to get everyone to where they needed to go when they needed to be there. I was never able to solve the problem. It sure made for a breakneck pace.

Now you've done it. Hilda has decided to pay you a little visit. I am not responsible for, nor do I want to know what happens. She has her own independent fictional insurance. Any damages? You'll have to discuss it with her.

Woohoo! Hilda ... and those other folks ... have arrived safely on my computer.

Y'all are a mess! Jean I'm so glad you've had a good brainstorming day. Days like that make it all worthwhile.

Hilda has rather...unusual tastes. None are directly discussed in Twilight, but they were hinted at in the first version. I think I pulled that thread in the rewrite, but Hilda is who she is. It's back story. It's not me. I sit there with my hands over my ears saying, "LALALALALALLA. I don't want to know. I'm just the author."

Yes. I think disasters will play a key role in ROAD TRIP. As will history repeating itself and generational cycles. I'm trying to capture the ideas and figure out the story that fleshes them out.

YOU PULLED THAT THREAD??!!!! BUT WHY???

Sigh.

I didn't want to develop it, and it I didn't think it was right to leave it hanging there. Do you disagree? Was the hinting at the darker side of Hilda's preferences intriguing? Did it add to the story? I have all the words. It could reappear if it adds to the story, but I didn't think it did. It seemed arbitrarily titillating to me.

I thought it made Hilda more complex. More real. The hints of her darker nature gave her texture. She did over-shadow the other characters, though, so maybe she needs a larger role.

That's important, then. More real and more complex are important for a character. I won't be working on this anytime soon, but if and when you get around to reading the latest version, let me know if I damaged that in the revision. It's fixable. Obviously, since Hilda spoke to you so strongly, I don't want to impair that.
